Scarborough Athletic will play their first competitive match at the Scarborough Sports Village in sixteen months this Saturday, though the squad faces early injury setbacks ahead of the new season.
Competitive football will finally return to the Scarborough Sports Village this Saturday, marking the first time Scarborough Athletic have played a league match at the venue in sixteen months.
The highly anticipated fixture will see Boro host promotion hopefuls South Shields, with a three o'clock kick-off officially getting the new National North season underway.
Fans have waited over a year to see their team back in action on home turf, but the start of the campaign brings immediate challenges on the pitch.
Squad depth is already being tested before a ball has even been kicked. Several players are currently sidelined with significant injuries, leaving the team with limited options for the opening weekend.
Ligament damage has proved particularly troublesome during the recent preparations. Harry Green is currently recovering from a severe ankle issue, while Alex Brown has suffered a painful thumb dislocation.
Financial constraints are also shaping the club's strategy for the weeks ahead. Operating without a large budget, the management team is actively exploring the loan market to bolster the squad and provide necessary reinforcements.
This approach proved successful during the previous season, and club officials are optimistic that similar temporary signings can be secured to help navigate the challenging National North schedule.
Scarborough Athletic manager Jono Greening said:
"Brownie, he's dislocated his thumb against North Ferriby really badly. It's pop back in now but he's snapped the ligaments in his thumb. Hopefully, if it started to heal, the the two ligaments we can play with a splint on. So fingers crossed for that. And Harry Green's hurt his ankle ligaments, I think he's been out about two weeks now, [ankle ligament injuries] can range from anything between three, four, five weeks. Hopefully, he's back for the second game of the season. We haven't got a massive budget in terms of money to spend. Hopefully, we might get a few loan players from clubs like we did last year which can help us out as well."
