The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain and snow affecting parts of the Yorkshire Coast on Saturday and Sunday.
The warning highlights the potential for disruption caused by heavy snow on Saturday, followed by a rapid thaw and subsequent rain on Saturday night.
Weather Forecast:
Outbreaks of rain are expected to spread northeastwards on Saturday, preceded by a spell of snow across parts of northern England and Scotland. While snow will increasingly become confined to higher elevations, there is a chance of temporary snowfall at low levels in some areas, including the Vale of York, where accumulations of 5-10 cm are possible before the snow turns back to rain. Higher ground above 150m could see temporary snow accumulations of 10-20 cm, with potential accumulations of 20-40 cm above 300m.
The rapid thaw of lying snow, combined with the arrival of milder air and an additional 20-40 mm of rain in some upland areas during Saturday night, is likely to increase the risk of rainfall impacts later in the period.
Potential Impacts:
Power outages and disruption to services: There is a small chance of power cuts, potentially affecting other services such as mobile phone coverage.
Isolation of rural communities: Some rural communities could become cut off.
Flooding and property damage: There is a small chance of flooding affecting homes and businesses, potentially causing damage to buildings.
Travel disruptions: Flooding may cause delays or cancellations to train and bus services. Difficult driving conditions are expected due to spray and flooding, potentially leading to road closures. There is a small chance of travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.
Safety Advice:
The Met Office advises residents and visitors to take the following precautions:
Plan your travel: Check for delays and road closures before setting off and consider amending travel plans if necessary. If driving, allow extra time to prepare your car, ensuring it is in good condition for winter weather. Pack essentials in case of delays, including warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, an ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, a high-visibility vest, and an in-car phone charger.
Prepare for potential power cuts: Gather torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items in case of power outages.
Assess flood risk: Check if your property is at risk of flooding and consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
Stay updated on weather forecasts: The Met Office recommends staying informed about weather updates as warnings can change quickly.
Warning Level:
This warning has a very low likelihood and a medium impact.
