A local supermarket on the Yorkshire Coast is celebrating this week after being named the best in the nation at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Proudfoot Supermarkets in Newby was awarded ‘Independent Retailer of the Year – Over 6,000sq ft’ at the 30th anniversary Retail Industry Awards. The award follows a significant transformation of the 10,000sq.ft store over the last 12 months.
The store underwent a complete refit, which was finished in early 2025. Key developments included doubling the size of the butchery, expanding the Co-op own brand range, and extending the chiller and soft drinks sections with new carbon-neutral, energy-efficient chillers. The refurbishment also saw refreshed flooring and shelving installed to enhance the overall store experience.

Judges for the Retail Industry Awards described the store as “phenomenal” and praised the recent changes. In their feedback, the judges stated, “It looked good before, but now it’s just brilliant”.
The store has reported stronger sales and increased footfall since the refit, alongside positive customer feedback. Other changes that have proved popular include a greater emphasis on food-to-go, with new hot food options.
The firm say the award serves as recognition for the Proudfoot team for their work in independent retailing.
