Today marks the annual celebration of a beloved British institution: National Fish and Chip Day.
Founded by The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA), this event aims to bring the nation together to celebrate the iconic dish.
NEODA, a non-profit organisation established in 1947, runs the day with the objective of promoting its members' interests and raising standards across the trade.
The idea for National Fish and Chip Day originated in 2015 when a finalist from the National Fish & Chip Awards suggested a national awareness day for the industry. NEODA picked up this concept, launching the first event with media activities designed to engage UK consumers and encourage visits to local fish and chip businesses across the UK. The day serves to give fish and chips the recognition it deserves and solidify its position as the nation’s favourite dish.
National Fish and Chip Day celebrates the entire industry, from the fishers who catch the fish and the farmers who grow potatoes and peas, to the shops and restaurants that prepare the final dish. NEODA works to encompass everyone involved in creating this "nutritionally-balanced family favourite".
Gary Lewis, President of NEODA, stated that "National Fish & Chip Day has always brought the nation together to celebrate this iconic dish". Supporting the day allows businesses to join an awareness day that generates "huge media coverage". Many shops have reported National Fish and Chip Day as their most successful trading day of the year.
