A major seafront redevelopment scheme in Withernsea has been completed, bringing new beach huts, micro-kiosks, and improved facilities to the East Riding coastline.
A comprehensive seafront development scheme in the East Riding town of Withernsea has now been completed and is officially open for business.
The extensive coastal project includes the installation of new beach huts situated directly on the promenade, alongside modern micro-kiosks located in Valley Gardens. Further enhancements have also been made to the town's boat compound and a shared cycle path at the northern end of the promenade.
According to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the initiative has been carefully designed to enhance the overall experience for visitors, while simultaneously providing crucial support for local enterprise. Planners aimed to successfully blend contemporary design elements with Withernsea's traditional seaside character.
The delivery of the scheme was a collaborative effort. East Riding of Yorkshire Council worked in close partnership with Withernsea Town Council, local businesses, and community stakeholders to bring the plans to fruition. Financial backing was secured through the Hull and East Yorkshire Devolution in-year funds, forming part of a wider package of coastal regeneration projects across the region.
Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
"We’re proud to work with local communities to deliver investment across the region. It’s fantastic that this scheme has now completed and hope it will play a significant role in supporting local businesses, and the wider community, in the area."
The newly installed beach huts are now available for seasonal hire, providing high-quality and accessible facilities for beachgoers. Meanwhile, the modern micro-kiosks are designed to offer unique opportunities for small and independent traders to operate from a prime seafront location. The council hopes this will encourage entrepreneurship and help diversify the local economy.
Carole Brattan, Town Clerk for Withernsea Town Council, said:
"We are delighted to see this project complete. The seafront is at the heart of our town’s identity, and this development represents a major step forward in revitalising the area, supporting local businesses, and attracting visitors year-round. We would like to thank all involved in the delivery of the scheme, particularly our funders, the officers at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Northern Shores Marine Ltd, and the contractors who have worked hard to deliver this exciting project."
Officials expect the regeneration scheme to deliver a range of economic benefits to the coastal town. These expected benefits include increased tourism, the creation of new jobs, and enhanced revenue for local small businesses. By improving the overall appeal of the seafront, the council aims to extend the duration of visitor stays and significantly boost activity during the off-season.
The redevelopment works also featured a thorough refurbishment of the boat compound. This aspect of the project was undertaken to improve access safety and infrastructure, while simultaneously creating new income-generating space and better facilities for its users.
Additionally, the seafront path received substantial investment as part of the project. The route, which is popular with both pedestrians and cyclists, has been upgraded to help promote sustainable travel along the coastline.
