An independent family-run food hall in Seamer has beaten two thousand entries to be crowned the top start-up business in the region.
Wilsons Food Hall, located near Scarborough, has been crowned the top start-up business in the region at the prestigious FSB and HSBC Small Business Growth Awards.
Owners Louise and Adrian Wilson successfully beat two thousand other entries to win the Start Up Business category for Yorkshire, The Humber and the North East.
The independent, family-run business scooped the award at a celebration dinner held in Leeds on the seventh of May.
The award category specifically celebrates businesses which have been operating for under two years in any sector, recognising those that have grown while building a solid foundation upon which their business can thrive.
Following their regional victory, Louise and Adrian will now be flying the flag for Yorkshire at the Federation of Small Businesses and HSBC national final. The event is scheduled to take place at The Savoy in London on the fourth of June.
Wilsons Food Hall first opened its doors in the village of Seamer in November 2024. The business was born from an eighteen-year vision held by Adrian and Louise to create an independent bistro, café, deli and wine bar that would make a difference.
The owners assert that the establishment was built on a commitment to quality, inclusivity and a broad offering for all.
Since its launch, the food hall has quickly become one of the standout success stories in the Scarborough area. According to the owners, locals have affectionately dubbed the venue 'the beating heart of Seamer', a title which reflects its warm atmosphere and strong community focus.
Operating seven days a week, Wilsons is described as a thriving, premium food hall. It features an in-house bakery dedicated to producing fresh breads, cakes and pastries.
Customers can also explore a deli counter alongside a welcoming bistro which serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and evening meals.
In addition to dining in, there is a popular takeaway offering that includes stone-baked pizzas. The venue also boasts a carefully curated wine cellar showcasing over two hundred wines sourced from small, independent vineyards.
According to Adrian and Louise, Wilsons is one of the few venues granted permission to serve H.R. Higgins coffee, a brand which holds the prestigious Royal Warrant.
The business provides sustainable local jobs, currently employing a team of twenty-seven staff aged from seventeen to seventy. The owners say this fosters a team environment that reflects the diverse nature of its customer base.
Beyond its food and drink offerings, the Seamer venue has established itself as a lively events space and a regular meeting point for local businesses, residents and visitors.
Regular events hosted at the food hall include live music nights and book clubs, with upcoming additions to the schedule such as a weekend walking group.
Previous events have included a Yorkshire beer evening complete with pie and peas, a Taittinger Champagne UK tasting event, and a Piano Sunday featuring local saxophonists and a live singer.
Owner Louise Wilson said:
"We are absolutely delighted to have won the Start Up Business category at the FSB & HSBC Small Business Growth Awards. To receive this recognition so early in our journey means a huge amount to us all. The evening was incredibly inspiring, being surrounded by so many passionate and hardworking businesses and entrepreneurs from across the region.
Winning this award is a real reflection of the dedication, commitment and hard work our entire team puts into Wilsons every single day, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we have achieved together. We’re now really looking forward to representing the region at the national final at The Savoy in London and meeting the other finalists from across the UK."
