An orphaned seal pup recovering at Scarborough SEA LIFE Centre is receiving daily eye baths using chilled tea donated by Yorkshire Tea.
Daily eye baths administered with chilled tea are helping an orphaned seal pup recover from a severe infection on the Yorkshire Coast.
The two-month-old female seal, affectionately named Frank Ocean, is currently receiving the unusual veterinary treatment at a specialist seal hospital at the Scarborough SEA LIFE Centre.
A walker discovered the abandoned pup on the beach in Redcar. Following an initial inspection, animal rescue workers found she was suffering from a series of health issues and immediately transferred her to the Scarborough facility for urgent care.
Veterinary experts recommended the unique chilled tea treatment to soothe and heal the young seal's infected eyes. The pup, whose favourite treats include herring, requires the tea baths on a daily basis.
Crucial supplies for the treatment arrived from a surprising source after Harrogate-based tea experts, Yorkshire Tea, heard about the animal's plight. The well-known company threw their support behind the Scarborough SEA LIFE Centre by donating over a thousand tea bags to ensure the daily eye baths could continue.
Assistant brand manager at Yorkshire Tea, Lousia Godley, said:
"We've heard of our products being used in all sorts of innovative ways, but this might be one of the most rewarding. When the team at Scarborough SEA LIFE Centre told us that our tea bags could help with little Frank's recovery, there was no hesitation to offer our support. We're delighted to have been able to play just a small part in helping the seal hospital at the SEA LIFE Centre in the wonderful work they do, and we hope to see Frank make a full recovery."
Operations Manager at SEA LIFE Scarborough, Kieran Wade, said:

Just like her namesake, Frank is a superstar who deserves the best treatment and the opportunity to live a full and happy life in the wild. She has given Yorkshire Tea the seal of approval."
The young seal is now expected to make a full recovery from her ailments. Once the course of chilled tea treatments is complete and she is fully rehabilitated, wildlife experts plan to successfully release Frank back into the wild.
