First, Lewis Hawkins hit the upright with a skidding 25-yard hit, then debutant Joe Aungiers fired against the woodwork himself within moments.
Hosts Prescot Cables hit the crossbar then Shane Bland saved well before the home side had a penalty.
A Cables forward went over Kasper Williams' outstretched foot and the resulting spot-kick was converted just before half-time.
The home side then rattled the bar again seconds before the interval.
Missing crucial strike power, Whitby threw four up front and needed Bland again to prevent a late second.
