Whitby Town Football Club is set to mark its one-hundredth anniversary with a special centenary dinner featuring historic players, live entertainment, and a charity auction next Saturday.
Whitby Town Football Club is preparing to mark a historic milestone next Saturday, 23rd May, as the club celebrates its one-hundredth anniversary.
To commemorate a century of football on the Yorkshire Coast, a special centenary dinner will be hosted at the Whitby Pavilion.
The celebratory evening will feature a three-course meal for guests, which will be followed by live music, a disco, and other surprises planned throughout the night.
The event promises to be a nostalgic occasion for supporters, with appearances expected from notable figures in the club's history. Members of the 1965 FA Amateur Cup finalists' team and the 1997 FA Vase winning side will be attending the dinner.
Event organiser Martin Hart spoke about the significance of the anniversary and the opportunity for fans to reconnect with former players and managers:
"We are celebrating 100 years, which is a fantastic achievement. We're hoping to have even three guys from the 1965 Wembley team which is amazing, they're all in their 80s now, plus representation from the 97 [FA Vase winning team], and people that have been involved in the club playing and managing over the years, which I'm sure supporters who have been coming for a long time will recognise these people when they see them on the night and probably haven't seen them for 30 years and we're looking forward to the support from all the local businesses that we get. We've been very lucky with promises of raffle prizes and auction lots. People are very generous when they know that it's a good cause."
The centenary celebrations come on the back of a tense conclusion to the football season. Whitby Town narrowly avoided what would have been the first relegation in their hundred-year history, ensuring the anniversary event remains a joyous occasion.
Alongside the meal and entertainment, the club has organised an auction featuring a professional auctioneer, with prizes donated by supportive local businesses.
Reflecting on the dramatic end to the season and the planned fundraising activities for the evening, Martin added:
"We've got a a range of prizes, hopefully something to suit everybody. And, so bring your wallets, bring your bank cards. There are some exciting things to bid for and we've got a professional auctioneer doing the job. So I'm sure we'll have a bit of fun with it as well. We're all nail-biting on the last game of the season because that would have been a tragedy, celebrating 100 years and on and our first-ever relegation. So luckily, that didn't happen. And, yeah, it's onwards and upwards. It looks like there's going to be some changes, let's hope they're for the better."
Supporters and members of the community who wish to be part of the historic celebrations are encouraged to secure their places soon.
To reserve a table of ten or twelve for the centenary dinner, attendees are asked to email commercial@whitbytownfc.com.
