Both of Whitby’s RNLI lifeboats launched yesterday in rough sea conditions.
The inshore lifeboat was initially launched after reports of a person in the water near the East Pier. However due to rough sea conditions this was then stood down and the all-weather lifeboat, George and Mary Webb was launched instead.
The local coastguard crews and search helicopter were also tasked, and after some investigation it was discovered that the call was a false alarm but with good intent.
Howard Fields, Whitby RNLI coxswain said:
‘Thank you first and foremost to our selfless volunteer crew who turn out in all weathers, and during a pandemic, to save lives at sea. Thanks also to the local coastguard who we regularly work alongside to quickly piece together a situation for the swiftest outcome. On this occasion the call was made with good intent but thankfully turned out to be a false alarm. However we would like to take this opportunity to remind people to stay well away from the water during a storm. The sea is extremely powerful and cold water shock can have fatal consequences. Stay back and enjoy watching the storm from a safe distance and keep yourself and our volunteer lifeboat crews safe.’
Crew member Leah Hunter captured images of the call out and the sea conditions.
