Whitby Lit Fest Gains Charitable Status And Announces Acclaimed Novelist John Boyne For 2026 Line-Up

Whitby Lit Fest has marked an exciting new chapter by securing charitable status while announcing a flurry of new authors, including internationally bestselling novelist John Boyne, for its November event.

Whitby Lit Fest has marked an exciting new chapter after being granted charitable status.

The festival, which launched last year to celebrate the literary heritage of Whitby, aims to connect readers with contemporary writers and inspire both residents and visitors.

Gaining charitable status will allow the organisation to expand its objective to be of public benefit, advancing the education and appreciation of literature in and around the town.

Mark Williamson, Trustee of Whitby Lit Fest, said:

"Having charity status helps us build in sustainability into the festival, and allows us to expand its existing work around accessibility, education, and community outreach. We passionately believe that people living in coastal areas deserve a similar quality of culture and opportunity that audiences expect in larger, cosmopolitan towns and cities. Whitby has inspired writers who have shaped the nation’s cultural landscape, and that’s a legacy worth celebrating and nurturing."

The second Whitby Lit Fest is scheduled to take place from the 19th to the 22nd of November.

Organisers have just announced that one of the most successful and critically acclaimed novelists of his generation, John Boyne, will be a headline guest for 2026.

The author of fifteen novels, Mr Boyne is best known for 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas', a New York Times number one bestseller that has sold more than eleven million copies worldwide and been adapted for film, theatre, opera, and ballet.

His other international bestsellers include 'The Heart’s Invisible Furies', 'A Ladder to the Sky', and 'All the Broken Places'. During the festival, he will be discussing his new book, 'The Weight of Angels', which is described as an astonishing reimagining of the life of Oscar Wilde.

Several other prominent figures have also been announced for the 2026 line-up.

These include crime authors Elly Griffiths and Sarah Hilary, Channel 4 style guru Nicky Hambleton-Jones of '10 Years Younger' fame, historian Alistair Moffat with his book 'The North Sea', and debut novelist Helen Bain, whose acclaimed book 'The Daffodil Days' was selected as a 2026 Harper’s Bazaar book pick.

They will join a roster of previously confirmed authors, including 'Vera' and 'Shetland' creator Ann Cleeves, 'Chocolat' author Joanne Harris, this year’s Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger winner Mark Billingham, and the award-winning BBC broadcaster turned psychologist Dr Sian Williams.

Lois Kirlan, Chair of Whitby Lit Fest, said:

"We’re thrilled to be able to announce another flurry of fabulous names joining the 2026 line-up, and the full programme, including our outreach and community events, will be published soon this summer."

The inaugural event last year established the festival as a highlight of Yorkshire’s cultural calendar, attracting over fifty authors and drawing visitors from across the United Kingdom and beyond.

It showcased local authors and poets while hosting writing workshops and a school writing competition in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

The festival's patron is Whitby resident, former Radio 4 producer, and author Kate Fenton, while the acclaimed playwright Sir Alan Aykbourn serves as honorary patron.

Headline authors from last year’s event have highly praised the festival, with author Lee Child declaring the event a triumph.

Television personality Rob Rinder called it a joy and full of heart.

He said:

"A real celebration of words and ideas by the sea."

Actor Miriam Margolyes also commended the festival.

She said:

"Utterly wonderful…one of the best weekends ever. Joyous. Uplifting. Beautiful."

With the new charitable status in place, organisers are now calling on local businesses and organisations to get involved through sponsorship opportunities.

Mark Williamson added:

"Supporting the festival, from just £50, offers a unique chance to be part of a growing cultural event that brings significant economic and cultural benefits to Whitby and the surrounding area, in the shoulder winter months."
