A grassroots football team in Whitby has raised £250 for a local charity supporting children with disabilities by raffling off a signed Whitby Town Football Club shirt.
Players, coaches, and families from the Whitby Fishermen’s Under 13s football team have come together off the pitch to organise a successful fundraising effort for a local cause.
The grassroots community club has raised £250 in support of WHISH, a completely self-funded, parent-led small charity based in the area.
The fundraising initiative centred around the raffling of a generously donated, signed Whitby Town Football Club shirt. Tickets for the centrepiece prize were made available to the local community and avid Whitby Town fans, highlighting the young team's commitment to giving back as well as playing football.
WHISH supports over 200 children and young people across the Whitby and Esk Valley rural area who have a disability, Special Educational Need, or Hidden Impairment.
According to the charity, participating in their activities enhances the health and well-being of young people while improving confidence and self-esteem. The organisation states that it gives children with disabilities and impairments an opportunity to do things like their peers, access activities that most children take for granted, and learn and have fun together.
Bryony Hansell, a member of staff at WHISH, said:
"We are incredibly grateful to the Whitby Fishermen’s U13’s for their fantastic support. Their efforts help us continue supporting the lives of children with disabilities, hidden impairments or SEND. It was inspiring to see young people make a difference in the community."
Whitby Fishermen’s Football Club is dedicated to developing young players both on and off the pitch. With teams spanning a range of age groups, the club prides itself on promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and community spirit, whilst giving local children the chance to enjoy football in a supportive environment.
Mark Storr, representing Whitby Fishermen’s, said:
"Whitby Fishermen’s are delighted to be able to help WHISH in some way, who do a fantastic job within our community. We’re already working closely with WHISH and we’re looking to develop this further in the near future."
