Warning Over Tombstoning and Dog Walking Near Water on Yorkshire Coast

A Yorkshire Wide water safety campaign is highlighting the dangers of tombstoning and asking dog owners not to enter the water to rescue their pets.

30 organisations across Yorkshire have come together to promote water safety messages over the summer.

Tony Peel from North Yorkshire Fire and rescue says it's a particular problem on the Yorkshire Coast during the summer months.

The Water Wise campaign is also urging Dog owners are not to enter the water to rescue their pets.

Tony Peel says some of the messages are targeted at people who jog near water or walk their dogs near water.

All Fire and Rescue Services, Police forces and Local Resilience Forums across Yorkshire, together with several Local Authorities, Yorkshire Water, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, the Environment Agency, Canal & River Trust, HM Coastguard, the RNLI, the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and Outdoor Swimming Society are backing a campaign which is also warning of the dangers of open water swimming for inexperienced people.

Since last summer, there have been at least 180 inland water incidents across Yorkshire, 18 of which resulted in fatalities. Nationally, in just 10 days (from 10th to 20th July 2021) there were 10 coastal deaths.

The new campaign group say that knowing and understanding the hazards of open water – both inland and at the coast – could help to drastically reduce the number of people who get into difficulty each year.
