Warm Spaces will be springing up across the Scarborough Borough this winter following a good response to the councils £10k Warm Welcome initiative.
The borough council says there has been a strong response to its Warm Welcome initiative which is providing funds to help community buildings open their doors to provide warm places for people to go during the day.
Councillor Carl Maw is the cabinet member for stronger communities, he says there has been a great response to the initiative.
Voluntary groups in the Scarborough Borough are being encouraged to apply for funding to operate warm spaces during the winter months.
The Borough Council launched a ten thousand pound project to open up community facilities to provide warmth and shelter.
The Warm Welcome initiative will support Voluntary and Community Sector organisations to open up community facilities to provide warmth and shelter to vulnerable residents who may be unable to adequately heat their home due to recent rises in energy costs. As well as supporting community led facilities, public sector buildings such as libraries, the Evron Centre in Filey and the Falsgrave Community Resource Centre will also be available as warm spaces.
Councillor Bill Chatt thinks the money is vital.
Scarborough Borough Council is working with Beyond Housing and North Yorkshire County Council, charities and community groups to open up buildings as well as providing advice and support to people affected by the cost of living crisis.
A pot of £10,000 to provide grants of up to £300 has been created to support the roll out of warm spaces. The council’s Warm Welcome Fund will provide voluntary and community groups hosting warm spaces with quick and easy access to financial support, which can be used to help fund associated costs including energy bills.
It’s hoped some of the warm spaces will be able offer refreshments or a hot meal or provide a voucher to cover the cost of one.
All warm spaces will be identified clearly with a specially designed ‘warm welcome’ poster or window sticker, which the council will provide.
An online database of warm space locations will be launched for people to find a venue close to them.
Anyone interested in providing a warm space location or charities and voluntary groups requiring advice or support, can email matthew.joseph@scarborough.gov.uk
