Postal services in Seamer and Newby will be temporarily suspended from late September as both branches undergo significant building work.
Postal customers in Scarborough will need to rely on alternative branches from late September as two local post offices close for major refurbishments.
A five-month closure will hit the Newby Post Office on Scalby Road. Operations will cease on Saturday 26 September at 1pm to allow for extensive building work. Officials expect the branch to welcome customers back on Thursday 18 February at 9am.
On the exact same day, the Seamer Post Office on Main Street will also shut its doors for significant upgrades. The Seamer branch will close slightly earlier at 12.30pm on Saturday 26 September. However, residents in this area will face a much shorter disruption, with the six-week project scheduled to finish ahead of a reopening at 9am on Friday 6 November.
Post Office Corporate Account Lead Phil Manning explained the necessity of the simultaneous closures. He said:
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers during the work. The safety of our customers is of paramount, therefore, to allow for the building work to take place, it is necessary for the service to close temporarily."
During the five-month disruption in Newby, residents can access everyday banking and postal services at the Newlands Park Post Office, located less than a mile away. The Newlands Park branch operates from 9am to 5pm on weekdays. While this alternative branch excludes the Passport Check and Send service, it features ramp access with handrails and convenient outside parking.
Customers requiring the full suite of services can instead travel to the Falsgrave Road Post Office inside the SPAR. Located nearly two miles from the Newby site, the Falsgrave branch offers identical services alongside ramp access and time-restricted roadside parking. The Falsgrave Road location opens from 9am to 5.30pm Monday through Friday, and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.
For customers displaced by the six-week Seamer closure, the East Ayton Post Office sits two miles away. This alternative location actually expands on Seamer's standard offerings by providing a comprehensive range of travel money, vehicle tax, and on-demand travel insurance. The East Ayton site features level access and a car park with dedicated disabled bays directly opposite the branch. It operates from 9am until 5.30pm on weekdays, and from 9am until 12.30pm on Saturdays.
A second option for Seamer residents is the Edgehill Road Post Office. Located just over two miles away, this branch offers extensive opening hours from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. While it does not provide Euro travel money, it offers level access and parking directly outside.
The temporary loss of these two branches means residents will temporarily need to travel further for essential cash and banking services, mail processing, and bill payments. The Post Office maintains partnerships with over thirty banks, building societies, and credit unions, allowing the vast majority of bank customers to securely access their accounts over the counter.
Network officials state that local branches play a crucial role in communities, with research showing that post office visits help drive millions of customers to surrounding shops and local businesses. Across the network, the organisation is currently investing heavily to simplify services for postmasters and safeguard free-to-use cash machines.
