The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced the sad passing of Michael Wood, who served as the region's beloved town crier since 1997.
The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has officially announced the sad death of Michael Wood, who served as the East Riding Town Crier.
Mr Wood was a highly recognisable figure across the local area, having proudly held the ceremonial position since 1997.
He was originally awarded the prestigious civic role after successfully competing in a dedicated town crier competition.
Over the years, he became a familiar face to residents and visitors alike, always appearing at official engagements dressed in his traditional green and gold robes, completed with a classic tricorn hat.
His duties saw him attending a wide array of civic and community functions throughout the East Riding.
These official engagements included providing a ceremonial presence at council meetings, agricultural shows, community open days, and various public celebrations.
Following the announcement of his passing, the chairman of the council offered a tribute on behalf of the local authority, praising his long-standing dedication to the area.
Councillor Linda Johnson said:
"Michael has been a tremendous town crier and has become synonymous with the East Riding. He opened and attended so many events and was always enthusiastic and smiling. He will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."
