A North Yorkshire Moors Railway volunteer will bungee jump from Whitby's Larpool Viaduct next month to raise funds for crucial bridge repairs in Grosmont.
Essential repairs to a railway bridge in Grosmont will receive a financial boost next month thanks to a daring fundraising effort.
Crucial funds for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway infrastructure project are being raised through an extreme bungee jump off a major Yorkshire Coast landmark.
Luke Swinhoe, a dedicated volunteer on the heritage railway line, will take the plunge from the historic Larpool Viaduct in Whitby. The upcoming challenge will see the fundraiser leap from the towering brick structure to support the ongoing maintenance and preservation of Bridge 42 in Grosmont.
Bridge 42 needs urgent work, with temporary stabilisation and permanent repairs costing around £800,000 in total. While almost £400,000 has already been raised by supporters, much more is needed, and every single donation helps.
The bungee jump, organised by UK Bungee Club, is 42 metres in height over water, giving jumpers the stunning views of the picturesque North Yorkshire coastline, surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
Preparing for the massive drop, the railway volunteer has been reflecting on how his past outdoor pursuits compare to the prospect of stepping off the viaduct.
Discussing his previous experience with heights and stressful situations and asked if he'd faced anything like this before, Luke said:
"Yeah. That's an interesting question. I mean, I've been in sort of situations of, a certain amount of stress before and I've done. I've done some, you know, kind of high level walking in the Lake District, in Scotland and in some of the sort of mountains in Wales and things. which is sort of not quite the same but there is an element of, you know, being on the edge as it were looking down at things. I've done, you know, one of these rope slide things. I've done a few of them and I've actually thrown myself off a viaduct before on a piece of, you know, kind of glorified elastic really, so something new."
The upcoming jump presents a unique psychological challenge for the fundraiser, despite his past adventures navigating mountainous terrain across the United Kingdom.
Taking on such an extreme drop requires participants to overcome natural fears and trust in the safety equipment provided at the Whitby landmark.
Reflecting on the mental preparation required for the bungee jump, Luke added:
"It's contrary to kind of feel your basic survival instinct to do something like that. I mean, people definitely do these things, you know, people parachute, obviously in wartime and for sport things and um yeah, I mean it's it's it's a difficult question really about, how I'm going to react to it, I've had done sort of things where which I found challenging before, but nothing quite to this sort of level. So, Yeah. I mean, I want the years ago, yeah, when I was a teenager, a friend of mine and I went to Wales to do some parachute jumps. You know, it was a sort of basic sort of training and then a parachute jump, but the weather was so bad, we couldn't do any so it was cancelled and I never went back."
The leap from the Whitby viaduct next month will finally provide the volunteer with the extreme drop he missed out on as a teenager, all while securing necessary funds to keep the Grosmont railway infrastructure in working order.
