Train Strikes Hit Yorkshire Coast

There will be no train services from Scarborough or Whitby on Thursday as the latest RMT strike action affects both Northern and Transpennine Express.

Transpennine say strike action on Thursday and again on Saturday means they are running a revised and reduced timetable for the next four days.

Northern say a handful of service may be running on Friday but advise anyone travelling by train in the next few days to check their entire journey as services across the country may be affected.

Northern say:

"Despite suspending action by their members working for Network Rail, the RMT strike for members working for train operators, including Northern, remains in place.

Northern will run an amended strike timetable on the affected days, with a 12-hour operation on selected routes from 7am to 7pm."

Transpennine Express say:

"While a very limited service will be running on some lines, we are advising customers to only travel during the strike action if journeys are essential.

The official strike action will take place on 16, 18, 30 March and 1 April but we also expect days following a strike to be impacted, so always check before you travel.

We will continue to provide customers with information about the impact of the industrial action on our services as soon as possible. We’re disappointed with this industrial action, and we are very sorry for the inconvenience it will cause.

If you have booked a ticket for a strike day, we will extend your ticket's validity. If you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a full refund. "

In addition to the action on 16 and 18 March, there are further RMT strikes planned for 30 March and 1 April.

Given the impact of the RMT action on fleet displacement, services are expected to start later than usual on the days immediately following the strike dates (Friday 17 and Sunday 19 March), although a full timetable will run on those days once services are up and running.

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer at Northern, said:

“We’re expecting the skeleton services we can run to be very busy – so customers should plan ahead and check before they travel.

“Given the reduced timetable only runs until 7pm, I’m very keen to stress that people should check their ‘last train home’ on those dates – so that customers don’t find themselves stranded at the wrong end of the line as a result of this action by the RMT.”
