Councillors talk of a toxic environment and unseen influences as a motion of no confidence in the leader is debated.
The leader of Scarborough Borough Council, Steve Siddons, yesterday survived a vote on a motion of no confidence after a lengthy and somewhat unusual full council meeting.
The motion had be bought by independent Councillor Bill Chatt and supported by four other independent councillors. A similar motion was tabled by Councillor Chatt this time last year.
During yesterday's debate several councillors referenced a toxic working environment in the council chamber, including Councillor Joanne Maw who was elected for the first time in 2019.
There were also repeated and guarded mentions during the debate, of people outside the council trying to influence events, including this comment from Councillor Paul Riley referring to an unidentified DR Stangelove
Councillor Riley also talked of a "poisonous acrimony" which he says has crept in to council discussions over the last year and which he hasn't previously experienced either in the work place or in his many years working on parish councils.
Overseeing the meeting was the Mayor, Councillor Hazel Lynskey she had this to say at the end of proceedings
The debate, which ran for a little under two hours, resulted in the motion of no confidence being defeated by 25 votes to 20.
