A new public car park could be created in Scarborough's North Bay as part of a ‘temporary’ proposal by the landowner.
National Car Parks Ltd has applied for permission to turn a hotel car park into a public car park for up to three years in Scarborough’s North Bay.
The site, at 143 – 147 North Marine Road, would see a change of use from an area of hotel car parking to allow the land to be used for public car parking.
A proposal submitted to North Yorkshire Council states that the facility has capacity for up to 21 cars.

“Vehicular access will remain as per existing arrangements from Queens Parade,” plans state.
They add:
“Vehicles will enter and leave the site spread over the day as they would do currently, and as there are no material changes to the site, there is no visual impact on the street scene.
“The site has always been considered acceptable for the parking of cars.”
According to the applicant, a temporary use is being sought
“while the owners of the property consider the future options for the building – there will be no change to the overall appearance of the parking area”.
The proposed change of use of the site would be “less harmful” than if it were used for development, they added.
“Operating as a public car park will provide opportunities to help support the local economy,” the application concludes.
North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the scheme which is currently open to public comments.
