Strong Scunthorpe Swipe Aside Scarborough

4800 supporters, 640 from Scarborough, saw The Iron beat the Seadogs 4-1 in the Bank Holiday Monday fixture.

Boro boss Jonathan Greening said he took resposibility for the result, admitting he should have brought in some fresh players and perhaps gone a bit more defensive. But he also reminded fans that his team of part-timers were up against a full-time team who have spent a lot of money in the summer.

Scarborough had only conceded 2 goals in 5 matches but conceded 4 to promotion-favourites Scunthorpe at Glandford Park in the Bank Holiday 1pm kick-off.

The home side took the lead with Shrimpton curling the ball past keeper Cracknell after a lovely ball through which cut open the Boro defence.

The Iron doubled their lead on 31 minutes after a counter attack from a Boro corner, former Scarborough player Cameron Wilson with a great finish.

The huge contingent of Scarborough fans continued to roar Boro on in the 2nd half but the game was put to bed when Scunthorpe scored their 3rd with a penalty scored by Elliott after a foul in the box.

It was soon 4-0 when Elliott slid the ball past Cracknell, his shot hitting the post but rebounding in off Scarborough's Mulhern.

There was some late cheer for Boro when Lewis Maloney scored yet another free kick from outside the box, his second such goal in 3 days, but Scunthorpe saw off late Scarborough pressure to seal the convincing victory.

Here are Jono Greening's thoughts, speaking to SAFC TV after the game:
