Events and Schools on the Yorkshire Coast have been affected by storm Babet
Headlands School in Bridlington was closed on Friday as a result of the arrival of Storm Babet on the Yorkshire Coast.
The school say:
"The decision to close the school today was weather-related. The safety of our students and staff remains our priority. Any reported damage is being repaired and we continue to monitor the situation closely.
A full assessment is being undertaken and the school plans to reopen on Monday as normal.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused. "
Scarborough Spa have cancelled two of their events planned for Friday night as a result of the deteriorating weather conditions. Paul Carracks concert has been called off as has the first night of the Northern Soul Weekender. Scarborough Spa say:
"Unfortunately a decision has been taken to cancel tonight's Paul Carrack performance due to the adverse weather conditions.
This is based on fresh information received about the risk of continued strong winds and high tides leading to sea water overtopping at the venue.
All ticketholders for the Paul Carrack performance will receive a refund from their point of purchase in the coming days.
This also means that the opening night (only) of the Scarborough Spa Northern Soul Weekender has also be cancelled. It is planned that Saturday and Sunday are to run as normal.
We’re sorry for any disappointment caused."
Whitby Abbey have confirmed that the first night of their Illuminated Abbey event wont now take place on Saturday and will begin on Sunday instead. English Heritage said:
"Unfortunately, due to Storm Babet affecting the setup, Illuminated Whitby Abbey won’t be able to go ahead on Sat 21 Oct and will begin on Sun 22 Oct instead. The abbey will also be closed on Friday 20 Oct due to high winds.
If you have pre-booked your ticket for Saturday night, your ticket will be valid for any other night of Illuminated Whitby Abbey. Simply turn up and show your ticket to a member of staff on the door!
If you would prefer a refund, please email bookings@english-heritage.org.uk and let them know.
We’re so sorry for any inconvenience caused, but once the storm has passed, we can’t wait to welcome you all for another spectacular run of Illuminated Whitby Abbey!"
North Yorkshire Police say their force control room has been busier than usual today, their asking members of the public to report any fallen trees to the council highways department rather than the police.
