Funding bids for two sports projects in the Scarborough Borough have moved forwards this week.
The Borough Council has accepted a business case for work at the Eastside Community centre in Whitby meaning it can now be submitted to the government in order to release Town Deal funding for the project.
At the same time the council is to enter into a grant arrangement with Scarborough cricket club to allow delivery of £250k towards an programme of improvements.
Councillors did ask for reassurance that the recent sanctions imposed on Yorkshire by the ECB would not affect the cricket project.
The Council's Projects Manager Helen Jackson said assurances had been received from the club.
In 2019, the English & Wales Cricket Board updated its out ground criteria and minimum standards required which affected all grounds that host County Cricket matches including Scarborough Cricket Club. Clubs were originally given until the end of 2021 to implement these new requirements and standards in order to continue to host county cricket matches. However, due to the covid-19 pandemic this was extended until the end of 2022.
The Town deal cash will be used to help fund the required improvements to the ground at North Marine road. The Friends of Scarborough Cricket Club have provided match funding of £123,727 giving a total project cost of £373,727
The cabinet has also approved the business case for works at Whitby's Eastside Community centre - that plan can now be sent to government in order to release funds from the town deal scheme.
The Eastside Community Hub is made up of two phases. Phase 1, to create a purpose build unit for the Whitby Boxing Club to enable the club to expand and provide modern facilities for more people in Whitby. Phase 2, involves the renovation and extension of the existing Eastside Community Centre to provide a more flexible space so that greater use can be made of the building for training and community use. The extension will also host a community café and reception area.
Councillor Michelle Donohue-Moncrieff says the project is especially good news for Whitby boxing club.
The Town Deal funding allocation for the Eastside project is up to £823,051. Whitby Boxing Club have secured £317,000 for match funding including £117,000 contribution agreed by SBC. The remaining match comes from Sports England and Sirius Foundation.
