Retail Crime Surges In Scarborough Despite County-Wide Drop

Shoplifting and retail crime in Scarborough have surged by 27 per cent, sparking concerns from local councillors despite an overall reduction across the wider police force area.

Retail crime offences in Scarborough have jumped by 27 per cent, leaving coastal businesses battling a significant surge in thefts and shoplifting.

The sharp rise on the Yorkshire Coast heavily contrasts with an 11 per cent drop in recorded retail crime across the wider North Yorkshire Police force area over the past year.

Local business owners and shop workers continue to face challenging conditions on the shop floor. In response to the growing problem, dozens of businesses in Scarborough have joined a dedicated communication network to share intelligence and protect their staff from persistent offenders.

Councillor Janet Jefferson recently raised the issue, quizzing North Yorkshire's Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Jo Coles, about the ongoing blight of retail crime in the coastal area:

"Well, there appears to be a positive reduction in recorded retail crime across the force area of around 11% in the last year. Retail crimes in areas such as Scarborough continue to be problematic, with a reported increase of around 27% in the same period. Is the Deputy Mayor satisfied that the best approach is being taken to tackle this problem across the coast? We do have a 24/7 radio link of which we've about 80 members on it throughout the town I've one as well. Just covering businesses in other locations."

Police officials acknowledge the stark disparity between the coastal towns and the rest of the county. High-visibility patrols will increase during peak shopping seasons to deter thieves and support vulnerable store workers.

Deputy Mayor Jo Coles confirmed that successful strategies used elsewhere in the county must be brought to the coast to tackle the persistent problem:

"There has been a huge focus on additional patrols and particularly at the times of year when we know retail crime can be particularly prevalent. So in the run up to Christmas for example. And and I'm also very aware that the reduction in retail crime, albeit the 11% across the Force area is an incredible achievement. That that is not being felt in every part of North Yorkshire, and we just need to make sure that the good practice that is happening in some parts of North Yorkshire is being replicated as far as we possibly can. And the other thing the data shows you is that you can't stop looking at this particular crime type. If you stop looking, it comes back straight away. So I think it's one of those things that's right that the police are focused on."

The impact of shoplifting extends beyond Scarborough, with retail workers in Whitby also expressing their exasperation over the handling of the crisis.

During recent visits to coastal shops, officials discovered that staff frustration is not solely directed at the criminals, but also at the restrictive corporate policies handed down by their own employers.

To address these wider systemic issues, police and local authorities have hosted multiple symposiums aimed at bringing retail partners together to find workable solutions.

Jo Coles added:

"A drop of 11% in retail crime across North Yorkshire is not to be underestimated in terms of an achievement for the force. They are taking retail crime really seriously. There's been now two retail crime symposiums, one last year and one in the spring of this year, really bringing the partners together who are responsible for ensuring that everyone is doing everything that they can about that. I went to some retailers in Ripon and in Whitby, and the staff on the shop floor were incredibly frustrated about their own company's decisions about what their kind of corporate approaches to retail crime. That is something that I and the Mayor are really keen to ensure we continue to focus on."

The Mayor's office has pledged to maintain a strict focus on retail crime to ensure the safety of shop workers across the Yorkshire Coast.
