Scarborough Town Council’s full meeting has been cancelled due to ‘severe weather’ and a roof leak.
The full meeting of Scarborough Town Council scheduled for 7pm on Wednesday, November 19, has been cancelled due to a yellow weather warning in place across much of the region.
The announcement of the cancellation was made a few hours before the evening meeting was due to commence.
The town mayor, Coun Thomas Murray, said:
“Tonight’s full council meeting has been cancelled on safety grounds.
“The weather is turning rough, ice is expected later, and there is an active leak in the Council Chamber. It simply would not be responsible to ask councillors, officers, or the public to travel or attend in these conditions. Safety comes first.”
The Reform UK councillor added:
“A new date will be arranged and announced as soon as it is confirmed. All agenda items will be carried forward so no business is lost and nothing slips through the cracks. Thank you for your understanding.”
The meeting had been due to discuss several motions, including the adoption of an official emblem, HMOs, support for Scarborough 400 celebrations, and the use of hotels and accommodation in the area.
Independent councillor Rich Maw said:
“The clerk has taken the correct decision after assessing severe weather conditions, an active leak in the Council Chamber, and the increased risk of slips and injury due to the ice forecast for later this evening.
“A new date will be published as soon as it’s confirmed. All agenda items and reports will either be carried forward or rescheduled as appropriate.
“While I’m disappointed – I’ve spent a significant amount of time reviewing the minutes, agenda items, and motions – the safety of residents, councillors, and staff has to come first.”
An amber weather warning has also been issued for Thursday, with the Met Office predicting that “as much as 15 to 25 cm” of snow could accumulate over the North York Moors.
The date of the next full meeting has not yet been announced by Scarborough Town Council.
