The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, has launched phase two of the Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund.
The Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund was the first of four schemes launched under the £27 million Mayoral Challenge Fund, which also introduced programmes to strengthen key business sectors, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate decarbonisation, and boost adult skills.
Building on the momentum of a successful first phase, phase two calls for ambitious, innovative proposals that breathe new life into York and North Yorkshire’s high streets. The aim is to create thriving, inclusive spaces that reflect local character, meet community needs, and spark lasting pride.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:
“High Streets have always been at the heart of our communities, they aren’t dying, they’re constantly changing.
“That is why I am so committed to investing in them with my Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets fund. Residents and business owners understand the challenges and unique character of their areas best, and I am here to empower their vision.
“For this next phase I am looking for bigger, bolder and more innovative ideas. Together we can lead the change, so our high streets reflect local pride and meet the evolving needs of every community.”
Phase One saw 18 successful projects across the region, including the ‘This is Scarborough Pilot Project’ a place-based branding and engagement initiative using print, digital tools, and a high street hub to connect with locals, businesses and visitors.
The Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund aims to support long-term improvements that "reflect the unique character and needs of each community". By focusing on local identity and practical solutions, the fund aims to create spaces that are built to thrive in the years ahead.
Successful applications will need to show a clear plan for how the project will continue to deliver value beyond the initial funding period, ensuring long-term impact for the community.
