The zoo at Sewerby Hall and Gardens has been temporarily closed, as it is within a new 3km protection zone set up following the latest case of avian flu confirmed in the area.
The Highly pathogenic avian influenza was first suspected in commercial poultry on 27 August at a premises near Bridlington. Following official testing, H5N1 was confirmed on 28 August 2022.
Now a second case has been confirmed in poultry at a second premises near Bridlington. A second 3km Protection Zone and 10km Surveillance Zone has been declared around the premises, with all poultry at the affected premises set to be humanely culled.

Whilst there have been no cases of Bird Flu at Sewerby Hall and Gardens Zoo, the building is within the new protection zone and the closure is to protect the birds in the collection at the zoo.
Marie Gascoigne, general manager, Sewerby Hall and Gardens, said :
“We apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused by this closure, but we know our visitors will understand the need for it.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has said that avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is very low.
