School Readers, a charity focused on boosting children's literacy, is growing its presence on the Yorkshire Coast and requires more volunteers.
The charity aims to improve children's reading abilities through individual reading sessions with volunteers in local primary schools.
Currently, School Readers has 3,000 volunteers who visit one in five primary schools in England, supporting over 30,000 children every week. According to Susan Lawrie, Volunteer Coordinator for School Readers, the organisation is "always on the lookout for more volunteers and more schools to join us".
The expansion includes the north of England. School Readers is seeking volunteers to fill positions in schools to help children with their reading. There are currently nine schools in the area participating in the program. More than 20 volunteers are needed to work with six schools in Scarborough and Whitby.
Volunteer requirements:
- Volunteers need to commit an hour a week for a year, to ensure consistency for the schools and children involved.
- Volunteers don't need previous experience or qualifications.
- Volunteers must be over 18 years old and interested in reading.
- The youngest volunteer is currently 18, and the eldest is 93.
According to School Readers, one in four children leave primary school without the expected reading standard. This can make it harder for children to access secondary education and have negative effects on their life chances. The charity believes that any support offered to schools to improve these statistics is beneficial.
Volunteers can choose to stay local or travel further to schools, depending on their preferences and availability.
School Readers is also looking for more schools to join their scheme.
Susan adds:
Those who want to volunteer or schools looking to join the scheme can visit the School Readers website at schoolreaders.org for more information and to apply.
