Scarborough Yacht Club is hosting a "Get To Know Scarborough Yacht Club" event this weekend, offering a chance for the local community to experience sailing and learn more about the club.
The event includes a talk on Friday evening and an opportunity to get out on the water on Saturday afternoon.
Friday evening's session will commence at 6:30 PM at the club with Saturday's activities beginning at 1:30 PM
Tom Hill, the Vice Commodore at Scarborough Yacht Club, says the idea is to encourage more people to become members of the Yacht Club.
The event aims to encourage more people to get involved with the yacht club. Tom believes that sailing has a lot to offer and is keen to dispel the notion that sailing is exclusive.
The club says you don't need any special equipment, experience or a boat to join up highlighting that there are"always boats wanting crews for those who don't own their own vessel.
The social aspect of the club is also a key feature of the weekend. The bar will be open again on Saturday after the sailing within the clubs lighthouse building with great views from the balcony.
Tom Hill says that they "have full access" to the top of the lighthouse, and they can arrange for people to have a look. He suggested this could be a significant draw for people to come along.
The sea conditions for Saturday are looking "favourable" with a "nice nice breeze" and a wind direction that should keep the sea "pretty flat". There might even be "a little bit of sun".
Tom Hill encourages people living on the Yorkshire Coast, particularly in Scarborough, to take advantage of this opportunity, as the yacht club offers a chance to "be involved yourself" in the sailing community. He reiterated that "once people give it a go, it's rare that they don't love it".
Anyone interested in attending the Friday night talk should head to the door across the small bridge at 6:30 PM, go up the stairs, where they will find members of the yacht club.
