An 18 year old weightlifter from Scarborough is looking for local firms to support him in international competitions.
Sam Read is going to be part of the Great Britain Weightlifting team at the IPF Powerlifting World Championships in Romania next month.
He's looking for sponsorship to help cover the costs of going to Romania and also the European Championships in November.
Sam only took part in his first competition last June, since then he's broken eight Yorkshire records and became the strongest ever English sub-junior at a national event in April.
He says he's having to juggle training and work to make sure he's staying in good physical condition.
Since his first competition, Sam has broken eight Yorkshire records and last month was invited to train with Team GB at the Gymshark Lifting Club.
Sam says last 12 months have been an amazing experience but says competing at the higher levels is financially challenging.
"A year after my first competition on the 25th of June 2023, I was invited to train with Team GB at the Gymshark Lifting Club and after impressing the coaches, I was formally invited to represent Team GB on the 31st of August at the IPF Powerlifting World Championships in Cluj Napoca, Romania.
The IPF World Championships are the biggest Powerlifting competition in the world, it is considered the Olympics of Powerlifting. Competing with the strongest people on the planet will allow me to gain more experience and identify how I can implicate this into my own future successes.
As I only turned 18 in June, I am struggling to independently fund this trip. I have reached the peak of my performance in the UK which is why I am reaching out to local businesses to seek their help to take my abilities to the worldwide level. I am also fundraising to maximise my budget,
alongside working 2 jobs tirelessly as a lifeguard at Cayton Bay Holiday Park and North Yorkshire Water Park".
Sam says how grateful he is for the continued support ahead of his trip to Romania but admits that the chances of him going to the European Championships in November is slim because of how expensive it is going to be.
Sam has always lived in Scarborough and attended Seamer and Irton and lady Lumley's Schools. He says sport has always been a focus.
"Sports have always remained a huge focus in my life, beginning with competitive scooter riding as a child where I first learnt the meaning of bettering and challenging myself. I also used to play football for Seamer FC and rugby for Scarborough’s first team as well as enjoying kickboxing and karate.
As soon as I was old enough to attend a local gym, I took up boxing. The inner drive and discipline boxing taught me led me to discover Powerlifting, where I finally found my true passion and after a short period I began competing. My first competition was the 25th of June 2022 where I placed second and qualified to compete at a national level."
Any local firms interested in supporting Sam in getting to the international competitions are invited to make contact via email at sam.read125@gmail.com
