After a two year hiatus due to the pandemic and to allow for the recovery of local sport, the Borough’s sporting achievers are again set to be recognised at this year’s Sports Awards.
The Awards ceremony will take place on Friday 10th March 2023 from 6:30pm in the Scarborough Spa Ocean Room.
Matt Hewison; Scarborough Borough Councils Sport Development Manager, who organises the event on behalf of the Scarborough & District Sports Council says
"we haven’t delivered the Sports Awards since March 2020 for obvious reasons and that was delivered from my house; so it’s great to able to get together again and recognise local sport. We have received a high number of nominations for the event and each category is really competitive, the Executive Committee had a very difficult task in identifying the winners in some categories such was the high level of achievement. The standard of nomination is again very high and you don’t fully realise the true level of sporting achievement across the Borough until the nominations keep coming in”.
The Sports Awards were first introduced in the early 1980's with just five categories and have evolved to now have nineteen categories that recognise all aspects of sports delivery from individuals, teams, coaches, volunteers, sports teachers, inclusive sport and for long service.
The event this year is being sponsored by leisure provider Everyone Active and will also be attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Scarborough and David Watson, the Executive Director of North Yorkshire Sport. The event will start with a musical performance by local entertainer; George Griffiths.
Matt added;
“the event is a real opportunity to celebrate and recognise local sporting achievement and we would encourage anyone who wishes to attend to do so, as they will be pleasantly surprised at how much is achieved by people and teams across the Borough. The event is free to attend and we are hoping to be joined virtually by two global superstars from our Borough, who have both achieved amazing accolades this year”.
