Scarborough will mark the summer solstice with a unique community yoga event on the town's star map beach this Saturday
Organised by Fran Kitson, owner of Scarborough Yoga Space, the event aims to raise money for Carers Plus, with all proceeds from the £5 entry fee going directly to the charity.
Fran says event will take the form of a collective effort to complete 108 sun salutations, a traditional set of flowing movements known as namaskar in Sanskrit.
"We're going to do 108 sun salutations down on the star map on the beach at eight o'clock in the morning for Carers Plus.
We think it'll take about two hours to do , we're just hoping that lots of people come along.
It's a traditional set of movements, a flowing movement, and it warms and works with the whole body.
And 108 is a traditional number and it's meant to represent spiritual awakening and be representative of the beginning of the universe.
we're very lucky, aren't we, to live where we live and be able to just go down to the beach and do something like that with the, the sun and the sea and the sand. So yeah, we're all really looking forward to it."
The organisers anticipate the sun salutations will take approximately two hours, starting promptly at 8:00 in the morning. Participants are advised to arrive a few minutes early, around "5 to 10 to 8," to be ready to begin.
Fran Kitson says they have a number of Yoga instructors helping to deliver the event.
"We're breaking it up into different sections to make it as accessible as possible 'cause obviously a hundred and eights a lot to do.
So there's nine different teachers all from around Scarborough. One from Hull. And each teacher will do slightly different versions.
We hope that lots of different people come. It's not just people that are like really fit and able to do it.
There'll be loads of different ways to join in. So you could just join in a few or you could join in the whole lot if you want. But we're gonna count the 108 as a collective. So you don't have to worry about trying to do 108 as an individual
if you've got some experience of doing yoga, then then yeah, just come along and join us and you can pay on the day if you want.
It's five pounds and it's all going to cares plus. "
While the event is designed to be inclusive, Fran Kitson suggested it's best for those with "some experience of doing yoga," rather than complete beginners.
The chosen location, the star map on Scarborough beach, is highlighted as an ideal setting for the event.
Attendees planning to join the sun salutations are reminded to bring "a couple of mats" as the ground is concrete, and to stay hydrated and energised by bringing "water and probably a few snacks". The £5 entry fee can be paid on the day.
