Scarborough RNLI Lifeboat Station is set to host its annual Open Day on Foreshore Road, offering visitors the chance to meet the crew and explore the lifesaving equipment.
Scarborough RNLI Lifeboat Station has announced the return of its highly anticipated annual Open Day, which will take place on the Yorkshire Coast later this month.
The event is scheduled for Saturday 25 July 2026 and will run from 11:00am until 5:00pm at the lifeboat station located on Foreshore Road in Scarborough.
Formerly known as 'Flag Day', the long-standing community event offers an opportunity for both locals and visitors to step inside the operational station. Attendees will be able to meet the dedicated volunteer crew and visits team, as well as explore the charity's lifeboats and vital lifesaving equipment.
Throughout the day, a wide range of activities will be available for adults and children. Visitors will have the chance to tour the station and speak directly with the Water Safety Team and the Swim Safe Team to receive expert advice on coastal safety.
In addition to the tours and safety advice, the Open Day will feature numerous attractions and refreshments. The Lifeboat Guild will be running a raffle and a tombola, alongside a cake stall and a book stall. The RNLI shop will also remain open throughout the duration of the event.
For those seeking a more in-depth understanding of the crew's operations, the station is offering an immersive 'shout experience'. This behind-the-scenes tour is priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for children under the age of twelve.
Scarborough RNLI Station Technician, Nick Gough, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event. He said:
'We are thrilled to bring back our Flag Day celebration this year. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with both visitors and locals while raising essential funds for our station. The Scarborough RNLI team is eager to showcase our work and engage with our supportive community during this special event.'
Mr Gough also highlighted the importance of the funds raised during the event. He added:
'Flag Day is a key annual community event that supports Scarborough Lifeboat Station's lifesaving work. All proceeds from the day will contribute to maintaining our vital search and rescue service and ensuring the safety of coastal communities.'
The RNLI team hopes that the community will gather to support the Open Day, helping to raise the vital funds required to continue saving lives at sea.
Alongside the event announcement, the RNLI has issued important water safety advice for those enjoying the coastline. The charity is reminding everyone to always check tide times and heights, and to watch for incoming tides. They recommend using a tide timetable or a dedicated application such as AnyTide.
Furthermore, the RNLI advises coastal visitors to ensure they have enough time to return safely and to always carry a means of calling for help. People are encouraged to tell someone their plans and their expected return time. In the event of an emergency, the public is urged to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
The RNLI operates as an independent charity, separate from the Coastguard and government, relying entirely on voluntary donations and legacies. Since its foundation in 1824, the charity's lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,700 lives, maintaining a 24-hour search and rescue service across 238 lifeboat stations.
