A local friendship group has unveiled a new schedule of summer events across the Yorkshire Coast designed to bring people together and combat isolation.
As the summer months get underway, Scarborough Oddfellows is inviting local people to make the most of the season with a programme of friendly social events designed to bring people together and tackle loneliness.
The local friendship group has unveiled its new Summer Events Schedule, featuring a variety of activities across July, August, and September.
The programme includes monthly Cuppa and Chat gatherings, gentle walks, lunches out, games evenings, and a brand-new Out and About series.
Stacey Taylor, the Social Organiser for Scarborough Oddfellows, says the programme has been created to encourage people to connect with others in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Stacey Taylor said:
"Summer is a wonderful time to get out and about, but we know that many people can still feel isolated. Our events are all about bringing people together through friendship, whether that's over a cup of tea, a leisurely walk, or lunch overlooking the coast. Everyone is made to feel welcome."
The group’s schedule spans several locations across the local area, offering a mix of free gatherings and outings where attendees pay for their own food or drinks.
In July, the group is hosting a free Cuppa and Chat at St Laurence's Church Rooms in Scalby, alongside an Out and About afternoon at The White Lodge Hotel in Filey. There will also be a Stroll and Sip event at the South Cliff Italian Gardens, finishing at the Clock Cafe, and an Out to Lunch gathering at the Three Jolly Sailors in Burniston.
The August calendar features a free Stroll and Sip around Peasholm Park in Scarborough's North Bay, complete with a picnic. Additional August events include another Cuppa and Chat in Scalby, a free Games and Giggles social evening featuring light-hearted games, and a lunch outing to Foulskye Bistro in Scalby.
Heading into September, which the Oddfellows recognise as Friendship Month, the group will visit the North Yorkshire Water Park at Wykeham Lakes for a gentle walk and cafe visit. The month also includes a free Bingo and Brew evening in Scalby, and a leisurely lunch at The Mayfield in Seamer.
Since launching earlier this year, Scarborough Oddfellows has continued to grow, welcoming new members from across the local area. While the group particularly welcomes retired and older adults from across Scarborough and the surrounding area, membership is open to adults and families of all ages.
Stacey Taylor added:
"We've been delighted by the response so far. It's been lovely to see friendships beginning to form, with many people returning month after month. Our aim is simply to provide opportunities for people to enjoy good company and feel part of their local community."
Established in 1810, the Oddfellows is one of the United Kingdom's oldest and largest friendly societies. It currently has around 39,000 members across 91 branches, offering friendship, social activities, wellbeing support, and volunteering opportunities, with membership starting from twenty-five pounds per year.
Anyone interested in finding out more is warmly invited to come along to an event and discover what the Oddfellows has to offer.
