Scarborough Kingfishers Celebrate Sponsored Walk Success

More than 55 members, volunteers and families from Kingfishers Swimming Club Scarborough took part in a sponsored walk on Sunday 5 July, completing the route from Scalby Mills to Scarborough Lifeboat Station and back.

Their efforts raised over £800 to support improved training and equipment at the club, with a donation also made to the Andrew McGeown Legacy Fund.

The fund fully finances Swim Safe sessions in Scarborough and Bridlington, providing free outdoor water‑safety lessons for children aged 7–14.

Donna Loveland, speaking on behalf of AMLF, said the support from Kingfishers is vital to keeping the programme running:

“Every year we help hundreds of children stay safe on the Yorkshire coastline through free Swim Safe sessions. Without support from fundraisers like Kingfishers, we would not be able to continue the programme for 2026.”

The fund was established in memory of Andrew McGeown, who tragically died in 2015 after entering the sea at Scarborough’s South Bay in an attempt to rescue his dog. His family created the Legacy Fund to ensure Andrew’s bravery would have a lasting impact by helping children learn essential outdoor swimming skills.

Kingfishers Club Chair Kath Minghella said the walk demonstrated the strength of the club community and the positive impact of continued investment:

“I’d like to thank every member, volunteer and family who supported our sponsored walk, whether by taking part or by contributing through sponsorship. Your commitment directly strengthens our club. Investment in new equipment and ongoing coach training has a real impact on our swimmers — it enhances the quality of their sessions, supports their development and helps them continue to grow in confidence and ability.

"We are also extremely grateful to Harbour Bar and Scalby Mills Pub for their generous support. Their involvement reflects the strong community spirit that makes events like this possible.”

Kingfishers is a registered charity, run by volunteers, has almost 200 members and welcomes all ages and abilities with a healthy Masters and open water section and sessions for swimmers wanting to improve their fitness.
