The NHS say the works are about creating a sustainable facility for the town.
The redevelopment of Scarborough Hospital is about improving the standard of the sites existing services rather than immediately bringing new services to the town.
That's from the team behind the £47m refurbishment, which is expected to be given final approval this month.
Lucy Turner from the York and Scarborough NHS Trust says the work will bring major enhancements to the site.
There have been a number of services which have disappeared from Scarborough Hospital over the last few years including the town's stroke clinic.
Lucy Turner doesn't rule out more services being added in the future, but says the focus of the redevelopment programme is making the existing services sustainable.
