Scarborough Hospital is experiencing record-breaking attendances and unprecedented pressure due to a combination of hot weather and an influx of summer holidaymakers.
A combination of hot weather and holiday visitors has placed Scarborough hospital under pressure that has ‘never been seen before’.
The number of attendances at Scarborough Hospital this week has “far outstripped anything that has ever been seen before” at this time of year, health bosses have said.
Clare Smith, chief executive of the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“The numbers that were seen on Monday far outstripped anything that we’d ever seen before at Scarborough Hospital, which placed it under significant pressure.”
“Of course, it’s the time of year where we have a lot more visitors to Scarborough and to Bridlington and those types of areas,” she added at a meeting of the trust’s board of directors on Wednesday, July 29.
She added:
“There have been significant challenges across our sites over the last few weeks, with really, really high levels of attendance.”
It comes as the number of 12-hour trolley waits increased in both May and June across the trust’s emergency departments, after figures had fallen between February and April.
NHS England recently said A&E departments across the country “bore the brunt” as the May heatwave piled pressure on hospitals.
An average of 2,432 patients received corridor care in emergency departments in England each day in June, along with 749 elsewhere in hospital wards, totalling 3,181.
This is up from 2,242 in A&E and 658 in hospital wards each day in May, totalling 2,900.
Bea Taylor, fellow at think tank Nuffield Trust, said there is “no doubt” that heatwaves are putting additional strain on the health service.
“The health service is used to dealing with the extra pressure that winter brings each year, but climate change means hospitals are now facing multiple shocks throughout the summer months too,” she said.
Professor Frankie Swords, NHS national medical director, said:
“These figures show that summer is now putting the NHS under just as much pressure as winter, with staff facing an onslaught of demand – and we have to prepare for it in the same way.
“Staff are currently experiencing the busiest months of their career, but they are delivering for patients despite this record demand.”
