Coast and Vale Community Action is gearing up for an epic 24-hour sponsored Climbathon at Street Rocks, Scarborough’s community climbing hub, this weekend.
The event, dubbed #ClimbToTheMoonBoard, will see a dedicated endurance team climb continuously for 24 hours in a bid to raise funds for a brand-new MoonBoard – a world-renowned, app-connected training wall that will help local climbers develop strength, skill, and connection with the global climbing community.
Dan Bennett is an in-house climbing instructor at Street Rocks in Scarborough:
"Climbing is a completely inclusive sport. You know, everyone could do it. Everyone's welcome here. There literally are no barriers. We've got over the six months we've been opened January 18th, we've built a great community. We want to make our great community an amazing community, you know, and it's that we've got our climbers now.
"We want to help them take to the next step. You know, move them on, send them off into the world. So we can put a little gold plaque that says, Nathaniel Bonney, learnt to climb here. You know, it's, it's that. Yeah. Making good. Great, you know."
One of the challenge organisers, Mel Bonney of CaVCA said:
“Our team will be climbing non-stop for 24 hours — it’s going to be an incredible test of endurance and community spirit.
“Every move we make takes us one step closer to giving Scarborough climbers access to a world-class training tool right here at Street Rocks.”
Funds raised through the Climbathon will support the purchase and installation of the MoonBoard, developed by Moon Climbing. This addition will elevate the training potential at Street Rocks and create new opportunities for coaching, youth development, and inclusive sessions for climbers of all abilities.
Supporters can donate directly via the Crowdfunder campaign:

While the endurance climbing slots are already filled, there are plenty of ways for everyone to take part in the exciting weekend:
- Cheer on the climbers at Street Rocks throughout the 24-hour challenge.
- Join the kids’ event: “Climb a Rocket to the Moon” – a fun climbing challenge for children aged 7–18, taking place on Saturday 25th October, 10am–1pm.
- Donate and share: Support the campaign through the Crowdfunder and help spread the word using the hashtag #ClimbToTheMoonBoard.
The weekend will be packed with energy, encouragement, and community spirit as climbers and supporters come together to help Street Rocks reach for the stars – or in this case, the MoonBoard!
Teenage climber Nathaniel Bonney knows exactly what a MoonBoard could mean for his training:
"I'm 14 years old and I've been climbing for seven years of my life, and for me it is a sport. Some people have football and rugby, I have climbing. We love all the people we climb with. It's mentally challenging. It's technique, strength. Like I have a competition in February to join Team GB, the Olympic team.
"So very exciting. Going to put Scarborough on the map finally. Yeah. It's just, for me, it's the greatest thing in the world. The people that you spend time with, the people who've done it in the past that we can look up to. We've got Ben Moon- British, we've got Steve McClure, who was at some point Britain's best rock climber, and he's climbed here.
"He's set as a route. We've had Franco Cookson here at the opening, who's my personal favourite climber."
