The Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers has announced its closure after nearly five decades of supporting local charities and international projects.
The Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers has announced its closure, marking the end of 47 years of dedicated service to the local community and various international projects.
Since its formation in 1978, the club's members have worked alongside countless volunteers, charities, businesses, and community organisations to make a tangible difference both locally in Scarborough and across the globe.
A spokesperson for the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers expressed their immense gratitude to those who have assisted their efforts over the decades.
They said:
"As we bring this chapter to a close, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past 47 years. We simply couldn’t have achieved so much without you."
Over nearly five decades, the Cavaliers have organised and supported a wide variety of community and charitable activities. Among their most memorable contributions were the annual Dragon Boat Races.
Running for around a decade, the races provided competing teams with a fantastic day out while raising more than £15,000 each year for chosen local charities.
The club also held an annual Community Fair in Scarborough's pedestrian precinct. This prominent town centre event gave local charities the crucial opportunity to showcase their work, recruit supporters and volunteers, and raise valuable funds.
In addition to their own events, members regularly collaborated with CAMRA and other organisations to run popular fundraising tombolas and raffles in support of good causes.
Even in its final year, the club continued its vital work. Earlier this year, the Cavaliers played a key part in delivering a Community Fundraising Fair alongside Community First Yorkshire and CaVCA.
The event brought charities together to help make it easier for community organisations to find and apply for grant funding. The club has expressed hope that this valuable initiative will continue to benefit local groups well into the future.
The organisation's charitable footprint extended far beyond the Yorkshire Coast. Internationally, the club supported clean water projects in Ghana and contributed to Rotary's worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, which the club noted is one of the world's greatest public health success stories.
Locally, weekly meetings were most recently held at the Mayfield Hotel in Seamer. These gatherings brought members together to enjoy a wide range of informative and entertaining guest speakers from near and far. The club extended its thanks to the hotel's friendly and helpful staff for their ongoing support.
Reflecting on the core values of the group, a spokesperson for the Scarborough Cavaliers highlighted the people behind the projects.
They said:
"Above all, the Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers has always been about people—members past and present who generously gave their time, skills and friendship in the service of others. To every volunteer, local business, community group, partner organisation and charity we have had the privilege of working alongside over the years, thank you. The friendships we’ve made, the projects we’ve completed and the lives we’ve touched will remain our lasting legacy."
The club's official website has now been closed. However, their email address, Scarborough.Cavaliers@GMail.com, will remain open throughout July to answer any queries or to tie up loose ends.
While the Scarborough Cavaliers have closed their doors, they reassured the public that Rotary’s commitment to the community will continue through the remaining Rotary Clubs of Scarborough, Pickering, and Whitby.
A spokesperson for the club offered a final message to the town.
They said:
"If you would like to continue supporting Rotary’s work, we encourage you to get in touch with one of these fantastic local clubs. Thank you, Scarborough, for 47 wonderful years."
