New affordable homes in the Scarborough Borough could in future be made available to local people before being put up for sale on the general market.
Scarborough Borough residents could get first refusal on new affordable homes in the borough under a newly introduced scheme.
The government's "first homes" scheme has been recommended for adoption by the borough councils cabinet this week.
Under the scheme new affordable houses could in future be offered at a discount to local people, as council planning policy manager Steve Wilson explains.
Under the scheme there would be a three month period where only local people could but new affordable homes at a 30 percent discount.
Steve Wilson says the scheme could start in April and will require input from the council and the developers.
The plan is that for the first 3 months of any First Home going onto the market the purchaser must:
- Be a current resident of the Borough area; or
- Be in full time employment within the Borough area; or
- Need to move to take up employment within the Borough area; or
- Need to move to provide care and/or support to a close family member residing in the Borough area
The proposal will now go to full council for approval.
