Local first time buyers in the Scarborough Borough are set to get first refusal on new homes built in the area.
The borough council has approved a new housing strategy which includes provision for the scheme.
Cabinet Member, Councillor Liz Colling explains what it involves.
First time buyers in the Scarborough Borough are also set to be able to take advantage of a 30 percent discount on new homes.
It's one of the measures included in the borough council's new housing strategy.
Councillor Liz Colling explains who will be eligible.
Council planning policy manager, Steve Wilson, says the scheme could start in April and will require input from the council and the developers.
Under the scheme there would be a three month period where only local people could but new affordable homes at a 30 percent discount.
The plan is that for the first 3 months of any First Home going onto the market the purchaser must:
- Be a current resident of the Borough area; or
- Be in full time employment within the Borough area; or
- Need to move to take up employment within the Borough area; or
- Need to move to provide care and/or support to a close family member residing in the Borough area
