Scarborough Athletic, through the club's welfare and safeguarding team, have been taking part in a safeguarding initiative which is jointly run by The FA and The National League.
Together with a small number of Clubs from the Step 1-4 Leagues, we agreed to take part in a ‘soft trial’ of the NLS Safeguarding Standards.
Safeguarding Standards already exist across other areas of the game, a version of these will be coming to NLS (1-4) clubs soon. These are a list of requirements related to safeguarding that clubs will need to demonstrate they are meeting and by doing so, will help create safer environments.
The trial which started in April and runs until early June included several on-line workshops that allowed us an opportunity to talk through our current policies and procedures and measure them against proposed new standards that all clubs will need to meet. The new standards take into consideration the size of clubs and whether they have an Academy together with the extent of their community activity with both children and adults.
The Trusts Community Engagement Officer and Safeguarding Lead Steve Machen said:
“We agreed to take part in the trial because as a club we take safeguarding very seriously and it will further strengthen our practice with our ever-growing Academy and Community Outreach programme. We found through a supported self-assessment process, we were able to reflect on our current safeguarding practice and an opportunity to measure this against the proposed standards and help us structure a development plan going forward, we have found the process invaluable”.
The trial also gave us the opportunity to participate in The FA and National League’s safeguarding work receiving guidance, direct personal feedback and access to new resources and a chance to support and shape future safeguarding practice.
Meanwhile, the club's academy open sessions have been confirmed and Saturday is the last day to register.
