A Sue Ryder charity shop in Filey is set for a makeover after its storm-damaged exterior was granted repair approval by North Yorkshire Council.
THE exterior of a popular coastal charity shop that was damaged ‘beyond repair’ due to a storm will be repaired after plans were given the go-ahead.
The Sue Ryder charity shop in Filey will get a makeover after the shop’s fascia "fell away from the shop front onto the pavement" during a heavy storm with high winds last year.
According to the Sue Ryder shop, the sign was damaged:
beyond repair, causing significant damage to the shape and the aesthetics of the sign and also causing significant damage to the fascia the sign was attached to.
The charity shop, at 34 Belle Vue Street in Filey, is located on the ground floor of a three-storey building in Filey town centre, and forms part of a continuous commercial frontage along the street.
Planning officers said that:
whilst the proposed blue colouring is more visually prominent than some traditional shopfront signage, it is recognised as part of the established branding of the occupier and is not considered excessive or harmful within the commercial street scene.
They added:
The sign remains relatively slim in profile with minimal projection from the building frontage, ensuring that it would not appear unduly dominant or visually intrusive.”
No objections were made by the Higwhay Authority or members of the public.
The planning authority concluded that the signage would not obscure or result in the loss of significant features or detailing to the building and would remain as a fascia element associated with the ground-floor commercial unit.
North Yorkshire Council said that “overall, the proposal would not result in harm to the amenities of the public or private residences and would not cause harm to public safety”.
The application was approved on Friday, May 8, subject to conditions.
