Police Take Action Over Driving in Scarborough North Bay

Following reports of vehicular related anti-social behaviour on the North Bay, officers from Scarborough’s Neighbourhood Policing Team worked alongside the Roads Policing Team to take action on Friday night.

Concerns have been raised by Scarborough residents in relation to some drivers who have been seen to be street racing on Royal Albert Drive, whereas others have adapted their cars to be able to spit flames from the exhaust.

Last week, videos and comments were circulating on social media, some showing cars racing side by side on the seafront near to Hairy Bobs Skatepark. Officers say that enquiries are ongoing into these videos to identify the offenders to be dealt with as appropriate.

It was only last year when Scarborough Borough Council extended the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to ban car cruises following complaints in relation to anti-social behaviour, racing and damage on the highway.

PC Harvey Ross, Beat Manager for the North Bay said

“This enforcement is not about targeting modified car owners, it’s not about targeting young people, this enforcement is to keep our communities safe. We have lots of people who frequent the North Bay every night, but not everyone behaves an anti-social manner.”

Several drivers were stopped and spoken to about their conduct whilst using their vehicles on the road. Some have been dealt with by education, whereas others have been reported for offences.

  • 10 drivers received fixed penalty notices for breaching the conditions of the PSPO.
  • 1 driver received a written warning in relation to using their vehicle in a careless and anti-social manner – should they receive another written warning in the next 12 months, the vehicle will be seized.
  • 1 driver was reported for not wearing a seatbelt.
  • 1 driver was reported for making modifications to their exhaust to increase the noise it would make.
  • 1 driver was reported for displaying a number plate which didn’t conform to regulations.
  • 1 driver was reported for overtaking and driving in excess of the 30mph speed limit. This will result in a visit to court.

PC Ross said

“Public roads are not the place to race or perform stunts. It only takes one momentary lapse of judgement, and the results can be fatal. We will not tolerate those who drive recklessly or use their vehicle in an anti-social manner.”

North Yorkshire Police say that if you witness dangerous driving, always call 999. You can provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
