We may have the “typical” bank holiday weather, but we are still seeing an influx of motorbikes on our roads across this three-day weekend, that's the message from North Yorkshire Police.
Once again, they are increasing the number of officers on patrol on marked and unmarked police bikes in North Yorkshire.
Many motorcyclists will have heard the common phrase of “sorry mate, I didn’t see you” from other motorists after their vehicles have pulled out in front of them, bringing the rider to a rapid halt.
Officers, staff and police volunteers say they'll be trying to prevent any further “SMIDSY” incidents across this long weekend. Its part of a national campaign from the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) called Project Apex. The purpose of the operation is to work with motorcyclists to ensure that everyone gets home safely.
The Ride Craft website Ride Craft Hub provides motorcyclists with tips and explainers from pro riders all aimed at encouraging a smarter ride.
From Scarborough to Settle, they'll will be out in force with their partnership trailer, police motorbikes and cars.
The force say the main aim of the operation is to engage with motorcyclists, but they will also have a close eye on the road network and if they encounter motorists having a clear lack of respect for the law they will deal with it appropriately.
