PM Says Government "Committed" to Coastal Communities During Scarborough Visit

Thursday, 25 January 2024 20:33

By Matthew Pells with additional reporting from Anttoni James Numminen, Local Democracy reporter

The Prime Minister spent the day in Scarborough on Thursday and spoke about bathing water quality, the A64 and crumbling concrete in schools.

Rishi Sunak visited Scarborough’s Construction Skills Village in Eastfield and met with students and staff at the training school.

Earlier in the day, campaigners gathered in the town’s South Bay in the hope of confronting the PM over poor bathing water quality but Mr Sunak’s visit did not include a stop at the beach.

After a tour of the school in Eastfield, Rishi Sunak spoke with reporters and addressed local concerns about the cost of living, transport, the environment and crumbling concrete in schools.

Paddy asked the Prime Minister what action the government can take to tackle Scarborough's poor bathing water quality.

Asked about plans to dual the A64 between Scarborough and York – a plan that has been beset by delays for years – Rishi Sunak said that plans put forward locally were “very compelling” but did not give any outright commitment to Government support.

It was announced last year that the A64 road investment strategy scheme would be pushed back for potential delivery beyond 2030

The Prime Minister was asked if the government would bring forward the start date for works to Dual a section of the road between York and Barton-le-Willows.

Rishi Sunak was asked about his plan to address falling living standards and high levels of deprivation faced by people in Scarborough and other coastal communities.

According to a recent report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, almost 29 per cent of children in Scarborough are growing up in poverty, whereas in York the figure is around 20 per cent.

The Prime Minister said that as a recipient of £20m of Towns Fund money, Scarborough was “an example of a place where the Government has invested”.

He added that such initiatives were helping young people at the Construction Skills Village to “get the skills, opportunities, and apprenticeships that they need to succeed in life”.

The Prime Minister was also asked about the issues facing students at Scalby School where 17 classrooms were put out of action as a a result of being partly constructed with RACC concrete. Mr Sunak was asked if there should be more support for students taking exams this year.

As rumours of the PM's visit circulated yesterday, local people gathered at West Pier hoping to get an opportunity to put questions to Rishi Sunak, but in the end the Prime Minister's visit didn't include a trip to West Pier.

Scarborough Councillor Rich Maw was among those on the pier who had questions ready for the PM on a range of issues.
