Big Bear Bikes in Pickering has been named the first recipient of the national Local Bike Shop Week Award after securing nearly half of the public vote.
A Pickering bike shop has won a major national industry award which recognises the best in local, independent businesses.
Big Bear Bikes, which has been based in the North Yorkshire town for eighteen years, has been named the first recipient of the Local Bike Shop Week Award. The accolade champions the in-store and in-person experience over online cycle shopping.
Organised by the Association of Cycle Traders, which has been running Local Bike Shop Week in the United Kingdom since 2018, the result was decided entirely by a public vote. The Pickering business secured a commanding forty-two per cent of the vote against seven other national retailers.
Over the past eighteen years, the independent business has grown from a small local store into a five-thousand square foot showroom. It now employs twenty-five local staff members and attracts cyclists from across North Yorkshire and beyond.
Founder and Managing Director David Beeley said:
"Big Bear Bikes is thrilled to win the Local Bike Shop Week Award.
I’d like to say a big thank you to all the team at BBB and our satellite shop, Dalby Forest Cycle Hub, and especially to all our customers for their support.
We believe the best place to buy and have your bike looked after is a good quality, local bike shop at the heart of its community.
We are very proud to be delivering that in the Pickering and Dalby Forest area."
The business plays an active role in supporting the local economy. Alongside employing its team of twenty-five staff, it helps to sustain Pickering’s strong independent retail offer.
Furthermore, the company also runs the Dalby Forest Cycle Hub Community Interest Company. Its links with this satellite shop and the surrounding trail network contribute significantly to the wider Yorkshire tourism economy. Visiting cyclists drawn to the area bring additional footfall to local shops, cafés, and accommodation providers.
According to the company, the Big Bear Bikes team is made up of keen cyclists who boast expertise across different disciplines, ranging from road cycling to mountain biking. The business places a strong emphasis on after-sales support, offering servicing, adjustments, and advice to all of its customers.
The expansive showroom features around one hundred and fifty bikes, with a workshop, a bike fit studio, and a parts department all housed under one roof. The store stocks leading cycling brands including Trek, Santa Cruz, Orbea, Raleigh, Marin, Haibike, and Frog.
Community involvement remains central to the ethos of the business. Cycling courses are delivered through the Dalby Forest Cycle Hub, alongside support for local schools and athletes.
The shop also provides backing for a number of charities in the region. These include Ryedale Special Families, Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue, and Help for Heroes.
