Flamborough Parish Council has refused permission for the annual Fire Festival to take place on the village green on New Year's Eve.
The council had received two petitions which requested that the Fire Festival did not go ahead. Councillors also reported that they had received representations from villagers objecting to the Fire Festival for reasons including public safety, problems with parking in and access to the village, the general disruption to local families during the holiday and loud fireworks late at night.
Covid was also cited as a concern given the large numbers of people in a small space and it was noted that London had cancelled the annual fireworks display because of this.
A number of members of public also raised Concerns about the Fire Festival at this weeks Parish Council meeting.
They said that parking and access to the village was a problem; it was noted that in previous years cars had been parked illegally and the amount of traffic both parked and entering the village prevented access to local residents. Health and Safety issues were also a concern; access for emergency services could be compromised by excess traffic, and the safety of 2,000 lit fire torches. Antisocial behaviour in the village such as entry to and urination in private gardens was also reported.
The Parish Council voted to refuse permission for the Fire Festival to use the Village Green and stated that if such an event be proposed again the Council wished there to be a referendum in the village to determine public feeling. The Council said they were aware that the event raised funds for local charities and were willing to work with Get Kids Going! throughout the year to ensure that local charities continued to benefit.
