Four community sports groups in Hornsea have received a share of nearly £133,000 in commuted sums funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to upgrade their facilities.
Four community groups in Hornsea have been awarded a combined total of £132,845.49 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The financial boost comes from commuted sums and will support various improvement projects across the town to enhance local sporting facilities.
Developers are required to provide Outdoor Playing Space as part of all new residential developments above a certain size. When a developer cannot provide this space within the development itself, a sum of money known as a commuted sum may be paid instead, which the council then distributes to local community projects.
Hornsea Town Football Club has been awarded £74,068.85 to improve drainage at Hollis Recreation Ground. The project will deliver essential embankment and drainage works to address long-standing structural and safety issues. Improvements include regrading the northern bank, installing gabion retaining walls, and enhancing drainage to reduce waterlogging. The total project cost is £133,615.85, supported by additional funding from the East Coast Community Fund, the Football Foundation, and club contributions.
A spokesperson for Hornsea Town Football Club said:
"We are delighted to have been awarded this funding as part of commuted sums from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The funds will provide vital financial support for the redevelopment of the grounds. We express our sincere thanks to the council for recognising the value of community sport and for investing in opportunities that benefit local players, families and supporters."
Hornsea Cricket Club has been granted £48,473.64 to install a new all-weather cricket practice facility. This two-lane enclosed net facility will replace existing unsafe nets, providing a high-quality training environment designed for year-round use. It aims to improve safety, increase training capacity, and support player development across all age groups. The total project cost is £53,859.60.
Jon Fisher, Chairman of Hornsea Cricket Club, said:
"We are grateful to have been awarded funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council to help install a new all-weather practice facility. This will allow the club to proceed at pace with our growth plans to increase participation within our junior section."
Hornsea Bowling Club has received £16,283.00 to undertake essential renovation works to its outdoor bowling green. The improvements feature replacing an ageing irrigation water tank with a durable system, alongside landscaping works, the removal of deteriorated boundary hedging, and the installation of new seating. These works are required due to the deterioration of the existing green, which has been affecting playability, safety, and the long-term sustainability of the club. The club also secured a further £475.36 in match funding.
Patrick Plumb, President of Hornsea Bowling Club, said:
"On behalf of everyone at Hornsea Bowling Club, I would like to thank East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the commuted sums grant. The funding will make a significant difference to our club and our members. We are extremely grateful for the council’s continued support of community facilities in Hornsea."
Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club has been awarded £6,020.00 to refurbish its clubhouse. The project focuses on upgrading the clubhouse kitchen to provide modern, safe facilities with hot running water, and converting an existing lean-to into a secure, weatherproof storage area. Located on the seafront, the club regularly hosts matches and events, and the improvements will enhance its ability to support members and visiting teams. The total project cost is £6,688.89.
John Soulsby, a member of Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club, said:
"On behalf of Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club we are very grateful for the funds provided by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. This has enabled us to upgrade facilities in our clubhouse which without help would have been impossible."
Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and Planning, said:
"It’s fantastic to see investment being made in a range of community facilities across Hornsea. These projects will improve opportunities for local people to take part in sport and community activities, while helping clubs provide better facilities for their members and visitors. We’re pleased to support these organisations and look forward to seeing the benefits these improvements will bring."
