Scarborough Police say they are investigating a burglary at the Gallows Close Community Centre in the town.
An outbuilding in the car park was broken into and several bikes were taken between 3pm and 7.30pm on Monday (3 April 2023).
Damage was also been caused to two other outbuildings belonging to the centre.
Officers say:
"We’re appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident itself or any suspicious activity in the area on that evening.
If you can help, please email holly.marshall@northyorkshire.police.uk or call 101, select option 2, and ask for Holly Marshall.
If you wish to remain anonymous, you can pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Please quote the North Yorkshire Police reference number 12230059497."
In a post on social media the Gallows Centre team say:
"A number of bikes have been stolen, & expensive damage to our workshop has been done.
The bikes stolen are used to teach young people how to maintain them & then offered for free or for sale if not wanted.
We are a not for profit and self funded organisation, reliant on volunteers to help run the centre.
The monies raised support activities for young people & keep the centre running.
The damage to the workshop means we have to replace both door locks. This has to be taken from funds used to provide essential activities."
Unfortunately the workshop doors are so badly damaged, they both need to be replaced costing over £1300.
That is such a huge chunk which will have to be taken from funding raised
Fingers crossed insurance will cover the cost, but will also increase our premiums.
Team Gallows at Gallows Close Centre work extremely hard & all are very disappointed"
